Aaron and Janelle Herbert grow over 20 different varieties of vegetables on 120 acres of land along the North Saskatchewan river inside of Edmonton city limits.

In the early 1980’s, Janelle’s parents began to grow veggies on what was previously Janelle’s grandparents’ hog farm. Janelle and Aaron took over the farm in the mid 2000’s. They have carried along the tradition of growing crops that thrive in our northern climate for people who care about what they eat and want to know more about how their food is produced so they can be more connected to their food supply and eat healthy, seasonal meals.

Riverbend Gardens has been a familiar farmers’ market vendor for decades. During the busy summer season, Riverbend Gardens typically attends at least seven farmers’ markets every week! In addition to that, they partner with local businesses and offices around the city to offer a CSA (community supported agriculture) weekly vegetable delivery service from July to December.

Nestled in the northeast corner of the city, their proximity to the river, their low elevation and their sandy loam soil creates a unique microclimate which allows them to harvest vegetables much earlier than what is typical in the area. In fact, sometimes fog will linger on the farm until noon when it’s nowhere to be found in the rest of the city. Often at the first frost when other farms in the region have frozen solid, they only have frost on their rooftops.

Riverbend Gardens is best known for their colourful cauliflower, delicious sweet corn, tasty carrots and amazing array of potato varieties.

You can find them year round at Bountiful Farmers’ Market and Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market.

Did you know?

Riverbend Gardens is within Edmonton’s boundaries. In fact it is the easternmost point in the city!
